Spiders are the second enemy type encountered in Penumbra: Overture. They are weaker than dogs, but usually are more numerous.

Appearance[]

The spiders are incredibly large arachnids of an unknown genus. Unlike the dogs, they do not appear to be infected by the Tuurngait, though given their unusually large size it is possible that they were mutated by him.

Behavior[]

The spiders are social and do not attack each other, mostly residing in dark, moist caverns and tunnels throughout the North-Western Mine. They rarely, if ever, live in well-lit environments. Spiders will actively avoid bright lights, including Philip's flashlight beam.

They lay clusters of eggs which can be found by Philip in their habitat. Stimulating these eggs in any way will cause them to burst open with hostile spiders.

Upon spotting Philip, the spiders will slowly make their way towards him. Once close enough, they will jump up and bite Philip.

Gameplay[]

Attacking[]

Spiders can be killed with both the hammer and the pickaxe with 1-2 hits. They may play dead once being hit once, before proceeding to get back up and attack Philip once more. They can also be killed with thrown objects and explosives.

Avoiding Detection[]

Spiders seem to have bad vision, and thus can be snuck around easily if Philip keeps his distance. Unlike dogs, they are capable of jumping very high and will be able get on top of some crates and boxes.

Extra[]

The beam of your flashlight will cause spiders to run away. This is recommended over killing them, as they can easily outnumber Philip in hand-to-hand combat.

History[]

Character Spider Hater

The Spider Hater's bloated tongue after removal.

Unlike other enemies of the North-Western Mine, the spiders seem to originate from the mine itself as a local species.

An Archaic scientist named Dr Roberts (better known as the Spider Hater) had taken refugee in an unused part of the mine a while before Philip had arrived. During his isolation, he documented his findings regarding the spider species which shared his home. At one point during his isolation, he had woken up to a spider in his mouth. In a panic, he accidentally swallowed a spider and thus discovered they were edible.

Though originally considered to be non-venomous, it was later discovered the spiders contained a light amount of weak venom, which can be dangerous in massive quantities. When Dr Roberts had consumed them for several months, his tongue had swollen to absurd levels and had to be removed.

Trivia[]

  • Spiders appear in two games of the Amnesia series, which were published by the same studio, Frictional Games.
    • In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a spider was intended to appear in the game itself, but ultimately removed from the final game release. However, in the spiral stairwell down to the Nave, the very same spider can be seen on the wall, when at low sanity.
    • In Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, in the trophy room is a large spider in a display case. This spider could possibly be the genus that Philip encounters in Penumbra: Overture.
